Did you purchase a standing desk in hopes that your back pain would disappear? Does your neck hurt so badly that you have to turn your whole body to look both ways while driving? Do you feel like your tension headaches are ramping up and out of control?
You are not alone. At this moment, 100 million Americans are also experiencing neck and/or back pain. This doesn’t have to be your story.
Many of my patients come to me when injections, traction, decompression, traditional Physical Therapy, or surgery has failed. Have you been told you have any of the following?
Western medicine is heavily influenced by imaging. But did you know there are dozens of scientific studies that show things like disc degeneration and spinal stenosis are common even in healthy, asymptomatic people? What does this mean? Yes, you may have disc degeneration, but that does not mean the degeneration is the driver of your pain.
The current over-reliance on imaging may be the reason injections, surgery, traction, decompression therapy, and months of physical therapy fail to produce the best results. Although I will gladly review your imaging, I will also look for other culprits of neck pain, back pain, and headaches.
Let’s take a look at this image. Does the Red Zone look like your sciatic pain, lumbar radiculopathy, disc degeneration symptoms, or pinched nerve?
You may be surprised to learn that this is actually the referral pattern for a trigger point in your gluteus minimus. No amount of surgery, core strengthening, or decompression will resolve this pain unless the trigger point is addressed.
Let’s take a look at a trigger point referral pattern for the sternocleidomastoid (SCM). Trigger points here can cause tinnitus, sinus pain, jaw pain, and headache pain. Maybe you’ve taken sinus medications, had ear cleanings, traction, or injections without relief of your symptoms.
Here is a trigger point in the Upper Trapezius. The referral pattern is commonly misdiagnosed as cervical stenosis, disc degeneration, and a pinched nerve. Maybe you’ve had Botox injections in your temples, had traction, or have been wearing a custom jaw orthotic without relief.
Here is a trigger point in the infraspinatus. This muscle is located in the back of your shoulder blade. Notice how symptoms of a trigger point here can mimic a cervical radiculopathy. Perhaps you’ve had traction, injections in your neck, or performed nerve glides without relief.
Before treatment begins, you will receive a hands-on assessment for joint restrictions and trigger points that may contribute to your neck, back or headache pain. You may be surprised that a gnarly spot at the side of your neck is causing the stabbing headache behind your eyes.
