Massage and manual therapy

A common misconception about massage is that it’s only part of a spa day. Massage/manual therapy is an integral part of many of my treatment plans at New Moon Physiotherapy, especially those that include dry needling.

Research shows that massage is beneficial for soft tissue strains and injuries, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, quicker recovery between work-outs, and decreased muscle stiffness, among other things. While traditional massage found in a spa is focused on tension release, physiotherapy massage is focused on rehabilitating/restoring muscle and joint strength, mobility and function.

Although massage and manual therapy are not the sole modalities delivered during your treatment session, they are often included. Manual Therapy is an important part of most all sessions, aiming towards proper joint mechanics and pain-free movement.

Many of my professional and D1 athletes request massage/manual therapy as part of their physical therapy treatment program. Not only can we address existing injuries with massage, but we can reduce the likelihood of a re-occurring injury. Many runners and mountain bikers flood my schedule after a race in order to receive treatment to aid in post-race recovery. However, you do not need to be an exceptional athlete to reap the benefits of massage and manual therapy.

Patients often ask if I am a Massage Therapist. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy with over 30 years of experience treating myofascial tissue. During my treatment sessions I use modalities that cover the depth and breath of a patient’s pain and dysfunction. Massage and Manual Therapy are used as part of a comprehensive, skilled treatment plan. It takes a village of modalities to get a patient on the path to wellness, and we will work together to determine your optimal plan of care.
